The History of the Allwood Community Church

In 1925 a small group of people living in the Allwood section of Clifton came together to form a “faith family” and to worship and study together.  The church was first known as, “The First Undenominational Church of Clifton”.  As the new congregation grew, the name of the Church was officially changed to “The First Community Church of Clifton”, and services were held in the Allwood Fire House on Brighton Road.

In 1930, a piece of land at the corner of Chelsea and Merrill Roads was donated to the congregation by Brighton Mills and a small church building was constructed.

In 1932 the congregation voted to become affiliated with the Reformed Church of America, but its mission has remained true to its “community” church origins.

Expansions to the church building were constructed in the post World War II building boon.  A “Fellowship Hall” gathering place was built in 1949 and the Sanctuary was enlarged in 1952.  In 1956 an education wing was added to the building to accommodate a growing Sunday School program.

As we entered the 21st century, the Sanctuary space continues to be a place of worship for all God’s people and the building remains in constant use as space that is shared and open to the community.
